Anything that talks about your life should be able to show where it heard it. The Wick does. When it can’t, it says so.

A reply in The WickInvented example

You decided on 12 August to give your brother the dates first and leave the rest for the drive. Your messages from 3 to 19 July are set aside, with your yes, and a summary that cites all 44 is in their place.

You said the last visit ended early.

This isn’t from your record. Treat it as my guess.

How it’s laid out

Talk on the left. Keep on the right.

The Wick is designed as two surfaces. The conversation moves on. The page stays: what you decided, what you asked it to hold, quoted in your own words. When it changes the page, the change is shown, and you can undo it.

The Wick

The county sent the third batch today. Still nothing on the two contracts I actually asked for.

You logged the original request on June 11, and when they invoked the deliberative process exemption on August 2 you noted that it covers drafts, not executed contracts. Three batches in and neither of the two you named has appeared, which is the pattern you said you would start counting.

Their own retention schedule gives them fifteen business days.

This isn’t from your record. Treat it as my guess. Don’t put a number I made up into an appeal.

Do you want to draft the appeal from what we do have?

draft the appeal but keep the tone

The county contracting file

Opened June 11. Your words, kept the way you said them.

What I asked for

Requested: both executed contracts, plus any communications between the office and the vendor.

Plain language, one office, no fishing. I wrote it that way so that a refusal would have to be a refusal of something specific.

What they have said back

“They’re claiming deliberative process. That covers drafts. These are signed.”

The exemption is doing work it was not written to do, and every batch that arrives without the contracts makes that easier to show rather than harder.

Third batch, and neither contract I named is in it. That is three times now, and I am counting from here.

You accepted this a moment ago.

How I work this file

I file under the state records act, not FOIA.

Never name a source in anything written down.

What I have asked you for

Give me the date I said a thing and the words I used. Tell me when a number came from you rather than from the file.

Do not write anything I could not defend in front of the office I am asking.

As designed, with an invented example. The finished product may differ.

Every reply

Every answer comes with a receipt.

You shouldn’t have to wonder what it was working from. Each reply lists what it held, what it set aside and why, and which of two model tiers answered. Switch tiers in the middle of a conversation, and the receipt says which one you got.

Nothing silent

Nothing leaves without telling you.

Your words are kept verbatim, always. As a conversation grows, older words move out of what the model can see, and The Wick says so each time. They stay in your record, and it can bring them back. Before it replaces any of your words with a summary, it asks about a batch it names. If you say no, they stay.

Where it lives

It lives with you.

On your device.

Your record is encrypted under a key you hold. The search index is rebuilt in memory when you unlock it, so nothing searchable sits on your disk.

One boundary, stated plainly.

When you ask something, whichever model answers sees that turn in the clear. Encrypted on your device is not the same as private at the moment of answering.

Reviewed before it opens.

The encryption gets an independent review before The Wick opens to the public. Anyone in the closed beta is told it hasn’t been reviewed yet.

Coming with Lamplighter

Bring someone in. On your terms.

The Wick works on its own. When Lamplighter opens for practitioners and guides, you’ll be able to bring one in: send them a lantern, let them join a conversation, and see everything they add, marked as theirs. Nothing goes to them without your yes.

  1. Choose.Pick the conversations, or the summary, you want them to read.
  2. Remove.Take out anything you want kept back. It shows as removed, not quietly cut.
  3. Seal.It becomes a lantern: signed and encrypted, so they know it came from you, unchanged.
  4. Hand over. They open it in Lamplighter and read it with the same three marks you see.
With your lamplighterAs designed

Send one any time.

Mark it Urgent, Important, both or neither, and say why. Your lamplighter isn’t on call, and The Wick says so every time.

A weekly lantern.

The Wick drafts one from your week. Nothing goes until you send it.

When it can’t wait.

The Wick stays with you first, then suggests sending your lamplighter something now. You decide.

Let them in, or don’t.

Your lamplighter can ask to join a conversation. You choose whether, and what they can see while they’re there.

Lenses, and what they add.

Add a lens yourself, or let your lamplighter set one, along with a practice or a check-in. Everything they add says who set it, on every reply it shapes. Pause it or remove it any time.

Transcripts are yours.

If you agree to have a session transcribed, no audio is kept. Your lamplighter has a day to finish their notes, unless you give them more time. Then only you have it.

For practitioners and guides

In Lamplighter, you would read what someone chose to bring you, with the same marks they see: what is sourced, what was set aside, and what their companion couldn’t back up. Lamplighter also works on its own, for your session notes, one client at a time. Tell us what kind of work you do when you join the waitlist, and we’ll write to you about Lamplighter first.

Plainly

What it isn’t.

Not therapy, not a clinician.

It’s a place to think and keep track, alongside the people you work with.

Not a mind reader.

It won’t claim to know you better than your record does. When it’s guessing, it tells you.

Not open yet.

The Wick is in development, and Lamplighter comes after it. We won’t give a date until we can keep it.
